David Bouda, MD, FACP

Dr. David Bouda is a nationally recognized speaker, coach, and consultant with over 34 years of experience in the medical field. A board-certified oncologist and hematologist, Dr. Bouda has served in a variety of corporate leadership roles including sole proprietor and entrepreneur, university professor, chief of oncology, and chief medical officer. Moreover, he has built multiple cancer centers from the ground up including hiring personnel, designing the procedures, and training the staff. Dr. Bouda uses his wide range of skills and experience to support clients in enhancing their interpersonal skills, boosting their resiliency, and improving their process. He has worked for companies such as Johnson & Johnson, Veterans Affairs Medical Center, University of Nebraska Medical Center, and Menorah Medical Center.

Jennifer Comerford, MJ, OTR/L, CHC, HEM

Ms. Comerford is a licensed occupational therapist and certified compliance professional with 20+ years of clinical and managerial experience in a variety of settings including inpatient rehabilitation, home care, subacute/long-term care, and schools. She is presently a senior patient safety and risk management analyst providing services to physician practices through ECRI's Ambulatory Care Risk Management program. Ms. Comerford supports both a nationwide audience and individual clients; she also serves as an analyst for FQHC members of the ECRI and ISMP Patient Safety Organization (PSO). Ms. Comerford guides internal teams and clients in developing novel approaches and adopting fresh perspectives for content development and delivery.

Jennifer Kerrigan, RN

Jennifer is a Nurse Specialist and 3Rs Administrator in the Patient Safety and Risk Management department of COPIC. She received her nursing degree from Pikes Peak State College and joined COPIC in 2019. Jennifer’s clinical experience includes behavioral health nursing and hospice care as a registered nurse case manager and Clinical Director.

Dean McConnell, JD

As COPIC’s Deputy General Counsel, Mr. McConnell provides legal risk management services and has been a health law attorney for over 25 years. Prior to joining COPIC, he was a shareholder of Kennedy Childs, practicing in the area of health law, insurance, and business counseling. His experience includes health care matters such as HIPAA, business contracts, and fraud and abuse. Mr. McConnell earned his law degree from the University of Denver and currently serves on the board of directors and the executive committee for the Colorado Civil Justice League.

Dan Rosenquist, MD, FAAFP

Dr. Rosenquist is COPIC’s Nebraska Risk Management and Patient Safety Consultant and has primary responsibility for conducting educational programs for COPIC-insured physicians in Nebraska. A native Nebraskan, Dr. Rosenquist graduated from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine and completed his Family Medicine Residency with University of Nebraska Affiliated Hospitals in Omaha. Dr. Rosenquist maintains a medical practice with Columbus Family Practice Associates in Columbus and currently serves as the president of the Nebraska Medical Association.

Susan Sgambati, MD

Dr. Sgambati, COPIC’s Medical Director, is a native of northern New Jersey and received her undergraduate degree from Brown University with honors in Biomedical Ethics. She is a graduate of New York Medical College, and completed her general surgery training at the University of Connecticut. During residency, she performed three years of cell biology research at Yale University and completed fellowship training in Colon and Rectal Surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Sgambati practiced at Rose Medical Center in Denver from 1999-2020, was the Chair of its Department of Surgery for 13 years, and co-founded the Colorado Comprehensive Pelvic Floor Center.

Cindy Walsh, RN, BSN

Cindy is a COPIC Patient Safety Risk Manager for our Midwest region. She received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, as well as a business minor from Clarkson College, and has been a practicing nurse for 23 years before joining COPIC in 2018. Cindy provides facility assessments, practice quality reviews, and education to insured facilities and clinics. Her clinical experience includes oncology, home health and hospice, hospital performance improvement, and most recently Director of Quality Services in a critical access hospital.

Heather Westermeyer, ADN, BSHM, MHA, CPHRM

Heather is a Patient Safety Risk Manager who joined COPIC in 2021, bringing more than 17 years of industry experience. She holds a master’s degree in Healthcare Administration from the University of Phoenix, a bachelor of science in Healthcare Administration from Metropolitan State College, and an associate degree in Nursing. Heather is also a member of the American Society of Health Care Risk Management (ASHRM), Director At Large for the Colorado Healthcare Associated Risk Managers (CHARM), and holds CPHRM, LEAN Six Sigma, and Just Culture certifications.

Eric Zacharias, MD

Dr. Zacharias is the Director of Medical Education at COPIC whose specialty is Internal Medicine. He received his medical degree from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and completed his residency at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. He has served on the Boulder Valley Care Network’s Board of Directors and was previously the Medical Director for the Boulder Medical Center to Front Range Risk Management. Dr. Zacharias is also the author of The Mediterranean Diet: A Clinician’s Guide for Patient Care, published in 2012, and host of COPIC’s podcast, Within Normal Limits.
