Chairman and CEO

Ted J. Clarke, M.D.

Dr. Clarke became the Chairman/CEO of COPIC Companies in March 2005. Prior to joining COPIC, he worked for nearly 20 years in a partnership with Western Orthopedics, and today, he continues to volunteer his medical services at Denver Health. Dr. Clarke received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Brown University, and earned his medical degree from the University of Colorado. He completed his residency in orthopedics at North Carolina Baptist Hospital/Wake Forest University. Dr. Clarke served as the Chair of the Physician Insurance Association of America's Board of Directors and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. In addition, he is active in state and local affairs, having served as Chair of the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce Health Care Committee.


Steven A. Rubin

Mr. Rubin joined COPIC in March 2000 as Chief Financial Officer and was named President in early 2001. Prior to joining COPIC, he was the President and Chief Executive Officer of FirstCity Financial and also served as CEO and part owner of MortgagePlus, a Denver-based national mortgage company. Mr. Rubin has more than 25 years of executive experience in the areas of financial management, operations and strategic planning. He graduated with a bachelor's degree from Bowling Green University and received his master’s degree in Finance from Northwestern University’s Kellogg Graduate School of Management.

Chief Operating Officer

Gerry Lewis-Jenkins

Gerry Lewis-Jenkins has been with COPIC since 1991 and held various positions before being named Chief Operating Officer in 2015. Before joining COPIC, she served as Executive Director of Humana Health Plans of Colorado, and has a background as a registered nurse with more than 15 years of experience in clinical and hospital management. Ms. Lewis Jenkins currently serves on the boards of Craig Hospital and Pinnacol Assurance, and is part of the Community Advisory Board of the Center for Bioethics and Humanities at the University of Colorado. She also served as the Chair of the board of directors for the Colorado Regional Health Information Organization (CORHIO). Ms. Lewis-Jenkins earned a degree in Healthcare Administration and a master’s degree in Business Administration from Regis University.

General Counsel

Mark Fogg

Mr. Fogg has practiced law in Colorado for 32 years and is currently COPIC’s General Counsel. Prior to joining COPIC, he was a shareholder and former President of Kennedy Childs & Fogg P.C., where he focused on the defense of health care related claims. Mr. Fogg also served as a Chief Deputy District Attorney in the Denver District Attorney’s Office. He is the Past President of the Colorado Bar Association and is a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers. He received a bachelor’s degree in Political Philosophy from James Madison College, Michigan State University, graduating magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, and earned his law degree from the University of Colorado.

Chief Medical Officer

Alan Lembitz, M.D.

Dr. Lembitz was named Chief Medical Officer in 2012 and oversees COPIC's Patient Safety and Risk Management department. Prior to joining COPIC, he served as the Regional Medical Director of Prudential Health Plan. He is Board Certified, ABFP and has a background in community-based emergency departments and hospital or large group practice-based urgent care facilities. Dr. Lembitz has presented at speaking engagements for the National Patient Safety Foundation, Physician Insurance Association of America, and American Academy of Family Physicians. He earned his medical degree from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center and completed his residency in Family Medicine at North Colorado Medical Center. In addition, he graduated with a master’s degree in Medical Management from Carnegie Mellon University.

Chief Financial Officer

Niles Cole

Mr. Cole joined COPIC in 2016 and has more than 26 years of experience as a business and finance leader in the medical professional liability insurance industry. Prior to COPIC, he spent 17 years as the Chief Financial Officer at Constellation (formerly referred to as MMIC Group), and six years as the Controller at Physicians Insurance. In addition, Mr. Cole served as a co-chair and board member of Physician Insurance Association of America’s Technology, Finance and Human Resources Section. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Finance/Accounting from Minnesota State University and completed the Minnesota Executive Program at the University of Minnesota.

Vice President of Corporate Marketing and Communications

Kathy Brown

Ms. Brown’s tenure at COPIC began in 1989, when she was hired as the Agency Manager for COPIC Financial Service Group. Her prior experience in the insurance industry included managing a brokerage agency that specialized in hard to place risks and offering qualified plans to the employees of Denver Public Schools. She has close working relationships with family medicine residency programs and organizations involved in rural health issues, clinics that provide care to Colorado’s underserved population, and the medical and specialty societies throughout Colorado. In addition, Ms. Brown oversees staff and program support for the COPIC Medical Foundation.

Vice President of Claims

Sean Gelsey

Mr. Gelsey is COPIC’s Vice President of Claims. He has more than 20 years experience in claims management on a national and international level for both the government and the insurance industry. Prior to working for COPIC, Mr. Gelsey retired from the United States Air Force and worked in the insurance industry as a Senior Claims Professional, specializing in complex medical and general liability claims across multiple states. He represents COPIC at numerous conferences, and by sitting on boards and serving through committee memberships. Mr. Gelsey holds a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Colorado Boulder and continues to mentor others in insurance, leadership, and finance.

Vice President of IT

Tom Koenig

Mr. Koenig joined COPIC as the Vice President of Information Technology in 2008. He has more than 20 years of IT experience in a variety of industries that include insurance, telecommunications, online publishing and consulting. He attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he earned a bachelor's degree in Economics and a master's degree in Information Systems. Mr. Koenig participates as a member in groups that include the Colorado Technology Association, the Society for Information Management and the Physician Insurance Association of America.

Vice President of Office Services

Brenda Lantzy

Ms. Lantzy joined COPIC’s Office Services department in 1994. During her tenure, she coordinated the relocation of COPIC’s office to its current headquarters in the Lowry area of Denver. Ms. Lantzy was promoted to Vice President of Office Services in 2014, and in this role she is responsible for facility management.

Vice President of Human Resources

LaNee Reynolds

Ms. Reynolds is the Vice President of Human Resources for COPIC and has been with the company since 2000. With more than 17 years of human resources experience, she leads the company’s human resources functions and initiatives. Ms. Reynolds also provides human resources training, consultation, and other services to COPIC insureds. She holds a master's degree in Professional Studies from the University of Denver, in addition to her bachelor's degree in Business Management. She is currently pursuing her Executive MBA through Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management and serves on the Board for Doctors Care.

Vice President of Underwriting and Policyholder Service

Janel Loud-Mahany

Ms. Loud-Mahany has been a COPIC employee since 2000. She is currently the Vice President of Underwriting and Policyholder Services and has held several positions within the Underwriting department. Her experience includes oversight of the operations and underwriting of business for all types of medical professional liability coverage. Ms. Loud-Mahany holds a bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Regis University and is pursuing her MBA there. She has a Certificate in General Insurance and is an Associate in Insurance Services. She has previously served on the Board for Howard Dental Center and served on the Arapahoe County Cultural Council.

Vice President of Public Affairs

Beverly Razon

Ms. Razon serves as the Vice President of Public Affairs for COPIC and has been with the company since 2009. Prior to joining COPIC, Ms. Razon worked on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C. for nearly eight years. She leads the government affairs and public outreach for COPIC, engaging with business and health care organizations in an effort to identify opportunities to partner on legislative and policy initiatives as well as statewide and community projects involving health care and patient safety. Ms. Razon holds an MBA from Regis University and bachelors of science from Doane College. She is an active member of several organizations including the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce, the Colorado Competitive Council and Colorado Association of Commerce and Industry.

President, COPIC Financial Service Group

Sue Swanson

Ms. Swanson joined COPIC in August 2012, bringing more than 25 years of insurance experience in various capacities with major insurance carriers. As President of COPIC Financial, she is committed to overseeing her team and working with clients to personally identify, implement and monitor customized solutions.

Vice President of Sales and Business Development

Kristin Stepien

Ms. Stepien is COPIC's Vice President of Sales and Business Development. Prior to taking over COPIC's Sales department in 2012, she was a Senior Account Executive with COPIC Financial Service Group. She has an extensive background in working with physicians, health care professionals and facilities to advise them on coverage options and policies that meet their specific needs. Ms. Stepien earned a bachelor’s degree from Duquesne University with a dual major in Business Management and Marketing. Since joining COPIC in 2007, she obtained her Certified Insurance Counselor designation and Associate in Risk Management designation, has served as a board member and fundraising committee chairperson for Kids In Need of Dentistry, and participated in the Impact Denver Class of 2011.
