COPIC has updated its "Benchmarks for Electronic Medical Record Systems: A Decision Tool and Resource," first published in January 2001. The document represents a COPIC-led working group's recommendations as to the features of such systems that will be most important to physicians from the perspective of risk management and reduction of potential liability.
The updated Benchmarks were mailed in April 2008 in Windows and Mac compatible CD-ROM form to most office-based COPIC-insured physicians. The packet consisted of the following items:
- Cover letter
- CD-ROM containing Benchmarks document in PDF format
- Instructions for applying for credit under COPIC's Experience Rating System for use of an EMR
COPIC-insured physicians who did not receive the CD-ROM in the initial April mailing can receive a copy free of charge. In addition, a limited number of hard copies of the Benchmarks document are available to COPIC insureds who cannot utilize the CD-ROM. Physicians who are not insured with COPIC may obtain the Benchmarks for a fee ($25 for CD-ROM; $45 for CD-ROM plus hard-copy binder) by completing the Benchmarks for EMRS Order Form.
